Beach Snook May 11
Hit the beach this morning for my first snook trip of the season. Kind of knew it was going to be good when I encountered a school of large jack crevalle first thing. Made a cast and immediately hooked an 8-pounder, which took me into the backing.
Found some wads of snook and caught and released 19. Largest fish was 25 inches. I choked on a large snook that I watched eat the fly.
Also caught and released 19 spotted seatrout to 20 inches.
All fish were taken on 6-weight fly rod, sinktip line and D.T. Special flies.
The season is just beginning and should last through the summer. Peak month is June.

Went out to Boca Grande with the family that were in for Mothers Day last Saturday & didn't take the flyrod because the leg cramps haven't healed yet; but should have. The snook were in the surf & as pale as I've ever seen them! Took a while to get the eyes accustomed to looking for just shadows instead of fish; but then there were schools of them swimming with the bathers that I'd probably have never seen looking for the whole fish. Guess Steve was up on the Manasota or Nokomis beaches as the Ladies Day Tarpon Tourney had Bocas' waters full of boats:cool:
