I recall mention of the airgun in DeVoto's abridgement of the expeditions journals but I believe this guy vastly overstates it's imporrtance. It was one of several wonders that the corps of discovery used to impress the tribes including Clark's negro manservant York and his huge Newfoundland retreiver. The main reason the tribes along the way did not slaughter them was a tradition of hospitality to travelers and the fact that none of the tribes was then at war with the white man. Only the blackfeet who first encdountered them in the company of their traditional enemies the crows made war on the corps of discovery or the early mountain men. If they had known what was to come after them I'm sure that the tribes would have reacted differently
