salmon fly vise?
Looking for a new vise. My vise I have right now is a good vise for size 12 to 32 I need a vise that will hold spey and salmon hooks from size 6 to 7/0 if you know what I mean my current vise just will not hold them. Also price is kind of a factor like somewhere under say 375. Looking forward to some advise.

blue gill,
Within that price range there are lots to choose form.I'd say the first decision you need to make is:
*Must I have a true rotary function? If yes, you'll reduce the choices dramatically.
Good luck.

Rotary is what I started with and I think it is a must I like to rotate the fly so I can see the under side of the fly not to actually tie rotary.

I have owned and tied extensively on both a Regal and a DynaKing Baracuda and I now tie on the Nor Vise which I like the best of all. It is a true rotary, easy to adjust to any size hook and when coupled with the Nor Vise bobbin is a terrific tying system. There are a couple of Nor Vise available on ebay right now at a price that will save you enough money to buy a bunch of fancy tying materials for your salmon flies. Just a thought...

7/0 is a pretty big hook. I use a Nor VIse for all of my tying. I also use the fine point jaws for all of my flies from the tiny stuff up to over 9/0. For the big hooks say over 7/0 or 8/0, Norm made a modifyed arm for the jaws for me. This is so I can use the rotary function to apply ribs, floss and hackle.
Happy Trails!

I to use a Nor Vise at times but I like my Dyna-King to. You might want to take a look at the Barracuda. It is a Rotary vise and I think for flies like you are talking about you should have that. It will also hold hooks up to 10/0 I know that I have tied on 8/0's for a client that was going for Marlin. The Hooks never moved while they were in the vise either. That says a lot. Ron

Thanks for the advise I will check that out also not limiting my self just yet has anyone used a hmh to tie salmon flies they also seem to be a good vise with rotary.

I have used an HMH to tie with and while it is a good vise I do not believe you will find it very good to tie Salmon flies with. It will just not hold the hooks well enough. In fact I use to own one that I bought from Bill Hunter. I gave it to a young fellow to start tying with. Ron
