What is your budget?
For just under a hundred bucks, the St. Croix Premier and Temple Fork Signature series rods are quite nice in a 5 or 6 weight for panfish and trout and even some bass fishing.
If at all possible, check out rods at a local shop.
You will then need a fly line to match the rod. I like the Scientific Anglers Master Headstart or Rio Mainstream lines as budget lines as well as the Cortland 333 lines.

I'm really new to the sport, so I was thinking under $50 to get me started.....I still have to buy line, backing, and leaders...
Joel,
A lot depends on what type of fishing you plan on doing. That reel can be used on rod wts from 2 through 6 which covers a lot of rods. If you would like to get a good all purpose rod wt, I would recommend a 5 wt rod. As far as which make/model rod purchase, that depends a lot on personal preference and of course your budget. The two that Tailingloop recommended are good deals for the money or if your budget is very limited, you could look at Sierratradingpost.com as they have some rods on sale. Cabela's also has some decent rods for the money and have an excellent customer service track record. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your help.....
would this be a good choice???

The Albright Yellowstone series rods at $39 is perhaps the best inexpensive rod that I have seen. It usually comes packaged with a reels for $69 but some shops sell the rod seperately.
I think that Orvis rod you linked to would be a good choice.

Welcome to the best fly fishing site around.
That Orvis rod may be the ticket.
