Major Kudos to RST
This is my first post on FAOL and I wanted to thank RST of all his help. You guys/gals have a top notch web site here.
I have been contemplating travel down the slippery slope to fly fishing. I have fished all my life and fish a couple times a week on average but I have never used a fly rod. I inquired on crappie.com(I'm a crappie fisherman in more than one way) about fly fishing and exchanged P.M.'s with deathb4disco on the subject. He directed me to FAOL a few days ago and gave me RST's e-mail address. I am very impressed with the quality of content of the site to say the least. Move over, I am impressed with Bob as a person. After a couple of e-mail exchange's I learned that I work in the town where Bob lives and we in fact know each other through my work place. Bob shows up at work today to see if I am not to busy to chat, he brings me some FF catalogs, and we go out back so he can help me cast.
A few minutes into casting my "combo outfit" and Bob says "It will be very easy for you to become discouraged trying to learn on this rod". The "rod" or "cane pole" as he refereed to it again, is a cheap $50.00 out the door rod, reel, line, backing, flies, etc. I knew it was not much but was hoping to "luck" out. Now you know why I never buy lottery tickets!! Anyway, Bob offers to let me borrow one of his back up rods to learn on, I decline the genuine gesture and thank him. Around 4hrs later he shows up again with the rod, reel, line and all in a nice case and says "Here take this and use it". LOL.... What a fellow. Thanks again Bob and I'll give it a good workout this weekend.

Fred I know what you mean. I have been on several forums and blog sites and this one has the best people by far. Very helpful and friendly. Everyone here is always willing to help in some way or another and you can probably find an answer to just about any ff question you can throw out.
On top of people helping out, some others have just sent me things to use. I pretty much have a whole outfit now thanks to some of the people here and I can't thank them enough. Hopefully I can stick with it and contribute as much as I can.
Welcome to the site by the way!!
-
Yeah. This sites full of em'. Folks seem to bend over backward to addict unsuspecting neophytes. Start asking questions, and you'll see what I mean.
Welcome to the board. :P Watch out for the Tennesseen's and those from the Island nation of Ohio. There's a couple from the left coast that you have to watch close too.;) Take what they say with a sack of salt. Get yourself comfortable, and join right in, and we'll do our best to yank you out of that comfort zone and into the realm of the dreaded "double haul".

Fred, WELCOME, to FAOL! Since you're from Kentucky and NOT from Ohio, you're obviously an okay sort!?! Me, I'm from "the left coast", and you've been warned about us already I see. Surprisingly, too, because those things are usually the type verbiage one gets from out of the US of A, like............. from Ohio, for instance.
Anyway, glad you found your way here, finally, and hope you enjoy your stay! You're right too, RST is a good guy, despite the fact he's recently had yet ANOTHER birthday and none of us can figure out how he's still even moving, let alone, fishing at his "advanced years"!?!
Probably the "gin in the Geritol" trick we're all guessing.

Welcome Fred.
Well thanks for that Fred, I certainly appreciate the kind words, and it was a pleasure to meet with you today and talk FF. You're going to love it here.
I also look forward to the day when you call up JC and Deanna and over the phone cut up all your spinning rods while yelling; "I'm A Fly Fisherm....... Wait a minute....this isn't the Dave Ramsey show, "sorry" forget that last.... just another "senior moment," maybe flybinder has a valid point! (Flybinder....it's definitely not gin in the geritol - but it might be something in the coffee!)
There are several folks on here that want to make a trip to the Cumberland this year at some point. It would be great if we all could make it at the same time. There are the four J?s, as I call them; Jim, Joe, Jeff and John, who want to make the trip. I?m trying to talk deathb4disco (Kevin) into coming along as well, which I don't think will be hard at all if he can get up here from Atlanta. And anyone else that would like to join in would be more than welcome. We?ll see if it all works out and "IF" the "rain gods" smile down on us.
Fred please keep us posted on your progress with the fly rod experience. With your many years of fishing background and extensive knowledge of the Cumberland River, it will be personally interesting to me to see how you take to FF and what you think of this game.

Fred;
Welcome aboard! Ya all can come down and fish with us anytime! Just remember that new guys have to make the coffee and chop wood for the campfire! Believe nothing that St. Paul tells you and avoid all contact with anyone from the Island State of "Ohio" ( They dine on SPAM and ToFu)!
If you really want to have a great time come on up to the Michigan Fish-In. We'll all be there!

Another greeting and welcome from SE Idaho.

Thanks Jack - we may just surprise ya with that "come on down" offer. Fred is the young guy so he can chop and I'll see to making the coffee.
When you get sick of beating the water down there come on up here and give it a go.
We got plenty to eat now and we don't need a fire, SURE DO - the "Island Nation Express Spam Truck" turned over on I-75 the other day on its way north. Man what a circus, BUT I managed to get my hands on one can. I figure one can should last us a couple weeks at camp, maybe longer. But we can freeze it between trips. The only problem was that a stray dog tried to get it away from me and bite the key off before I could get it hid under my shirt. Now I don't know how to get it open.
HEY JOE V... Need some help here!
