I have used just straight latex strips to tie something very similar. I like how I can modify the color slightly by changing the color of the underbody. I also use Peacock herl where you have the dubbing.

There goes the master plan on what I need to tie next again. I am suppose to tie to a schedule and the pattern to fill out my plan, but I see something like this and can't help myself, I have to have some of these in my box. Thanks for a nice one, loved the tutorial series of pictures, nicely done indeed.
