Spinner, my dad bought two of these as Cortland outfits in late 60's or very early 70's with an 8'6" fiberglass rod and an 8wt level line. The level line filled the spool to capacity with no room for backing. I still have both outfits complete with the Cortland line. By the way, that old line still hasn't cracked!
seems too small to be a 8wt.
I am going to put some WF 6 on it.
Got a new Grandt 8'6". Should match up well.
I just got out my reel, and the spool is 2.75" and the cage diameter is 3.25". The rod that it came with is recommended 8 wt line, but like I said just the line filled the spool to capacity. A little backing and a 5 or 6 wt would probably fill it nicely. My reel also has a metal spool latch cover and a small lever at the top of it to release the spool. Yours looks like it uses the large screw to remove the spool, I guess we don't have the same reel. Still glad to see the post, I haven't had this reel out in years so it was nice to find where I put it and take a closer look.
Sure looks like a Pflueger Medalist--right down to the screw and hole patterns. Wonder if Pflueger private labeled them for Cortland.
If you dont' get a clear answer here you could check over at fiberglassflyroders site. They have a good section on old reels.

I told ya elsewhere...That's a Bronson Royalist.
cortland answered said reel was made late 60s and was rated 5/6/7.
That is all the info they gave me.
