Scott;
I don't have any of the possum dyed black, but I just recently acquired a large stash of Black Bear hair from a taxidermist. Would the bear hair work as a substitute?
-
Allen,
I’ve never used bear hair but I’d guess it would work okay.

Scott

Looking at the picture I thought it was bear hair until I read the recipe.

Scott, You're killing me with your submissions!! Very good work you've been posting, I have found a lot of patterns to try; more than I have time to tie!! Seriously, though I appreciate your submissions and have printed some off to tie. Working on Autumn one from a bit ago. Got the pheasant rump and used koolaid to dye it orange. Now to make some time to tie! Keep it up, I will never run out of flies to tie. You have posted a lot of unique patterns that I have never seen before. Nice and buggy looking!
Thanks!!!

Please excuse my lack of a photo studio.
Tied some up. I substituted some Black Bear for the Possum. That Black Bear hair is some coarse, wiry stuff! Less is definitely more! Also, size 4 is probably as small as I would go with Black Bear. The three flies are tied on Daiichi 2161, size 4. The six are tied on 3xl streamer hooks, size 4.

Allen,
How about trying black squirrel tail? There are plenty of those in MI.

Oh, that's a good idea! I have a few as well! Thanks!
