Couple posts about this legend on the forum.
He was a big-time promoter of fly fishing and trout conservation. His shop, under new owners over the past couple decades, still thriving in West Yellowstone.
An interesting newsletter from Craig Matthews of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone today.
He tells how he called Bud 30 /40 years ago when he was going to apply to be a cop there. He wanted Bud to check out the condition of a mobile home there to see if it would be habitable if he got the job. Lilly helped him get the job of Chief! And encouraged Craig to start a wholesale fly tying business which ultimately led to Blue Ribbon Flies.
Trying to recall the gist of it. Hope I got it right.
I did know that Craig had been Police Chief at one time. I also heard that when he started supplying wholesale flies, he hired some developmentally challenged to work. Great guy! Big promoter of River and fish conservation....particularly on the Madison.
Craig is from Michigan. Another example of folks having relocated to the area from the Midwest or East....
