My first brown
Went on an outing with my local fly fishing club, last week end. Fished the Watauga River, in Elizabethton, Tn. Had a great time and caught some nice trout. I also caught my first brown trout.

Ron,
Hey, job well done! Remember that we have Browns in the Elk River too. They are beautiful fish. What fly did you use?
Great job...

Hey Ron, cool feeling I know, I won't forget my first Brown, it was caught in a small creek in West Virgina , those little goobers have some fight, ...:)

Hey Ron (good name you got),
Your one up on me. I'm still looking for my firsst brownie, maybe this year if I get to Montana, or fish some lakes on the dry side of Washington.

Here's the first (and only) Brown Trout I ever "caught" (dang I look young!! this was about 10 years ago):

The sad thing is...it was an accident. I was standing on the shore of Lake Michigan in mid September. We had planned to fish a feeder stream for spawning Chinooks, but the water in the creek was low, and there was a big shallow sand flat the salmon would have to cross to get into the stream.
I had tossed a worm on a hook out (just to catch something), and then was casting a big spinner or spoon for the salmon.
My rod had been propped up against my tackle bag, and was starting to head for the water. I picked it up, set the hook and started fighting this fish. At almost the same time, my fishing partner got a hit on his rod.
He landed his first, and exclaimed,"Hey, this fish wasn't even hooked!" He helped net my fish, and...it wasn't hooked either!
His line had somehow gotten wrapped around the brown's tail, and the hook was hooked over the line...so the fish was lassoed! His was about 8lbs, a little bigger than mine. My line was wrapped several times around the fish, and the hook was trailing out behind the fish. What in the WORLD?? Were these things ROLLING into the line??
And on a different trip to the same area, but actually up in the feeder stream, here the first and only Brook Trout I landed:

And the only Steelhead I've caught so far...12.5lbs:

At any rate, we eventually DID catch some Chinooks that year:

I haven't been back in years...that was some GREAT fishing!

Warren.
I was using the pheasant tail flymph, on a #12 hook. was a FOTW last month. I tryed lots of nymphs and soft hackles. This was the only fly that worked for me. The caddis hatch was over when we got there. I do want to fish the Elk soon too.
Fish n Dave.
I was happy with the small one, although there are larger ones in the Watauga. One of the members, who hired a guide, caught a 21 incher.
I love this sport.

Ron, I think your fish is great!
My intent was not to "outdo" your fish by any means. I just wanted to also share my first (and only) brown trout, and the odd story of its capture...which then led to the first (and only) brook trout, and the first (and only) steelhead. Rainbows I've caught plenty of, but nothing exceptionally large yet. I feel very fortunate to have landed such nice fish! Fish like that makes me wonder why I enjoy fishing for bluegills so much!
However, mine were caught before I'd gotten into fly-fishing...although I was using flies on spinning gear for the brookie (wooly bugger), steelhead (muddler minnow), and chinooks (egg-sucking leech patterns), so I envy your catch all the more! Keep up the good work! :D

Dave,
No problem, I have only been fishing for trout for about 3 months. It's all new to me. A nice brown, like yours would have really been something. Several of the guys in our group did catch some brookies. I wasn't lucky enough to come across one of them. Still a goal for me.
I agree with you about enjoying catching bluegills.
My quest for knowledge ( fly fishing & fishing in an area new to me ) continues.
I enjoyed your post and photos and hope to catch some nice fish like yours, in time. I'm starting to think I might have to hire a local guide.

That 8' long net really gives the fish the impression of being smaller than it really is. :)
Like it mattered at all.
Only wish I had a pic of my first brown too.
