Mustad 3366 versus Tiemco 8089
How do these hooks compare? I've tied only on the 8089s, and a size 6 8089 is actually a pretty big hook. I pretty much tie all my bass bugs on a size 6 8089.
But some recipes call for a 3366. If I could locate a fly shop locally that carries the 3366, I'd just compare them.
Is a size 6 3366 about the same as a size 6 8089, or no?
Re: Mustad 3366 versus Tiemco 8089
I use both hooks, the 8089 is finer wire and very nice construction excellent for hair bugs and larger flys, the 3366 is very inexpensive and heavier wire, the 3366 is the best bargin available in hooks for Clousers and small bass bugs (foam or hair).
The 8089 hook size has no relation to the 3366 size, the 8089 size 6 is probably equivaletn to the 3666 size 2 or 1 hook.

The Mustad is (from the Mustad catalog):
"Sproat, Ringed(eye), Bronzed ... sizes 3/0 to 14".
Says nothing about being short shanked and it looks regular length.
Don't know how it compares to the Tiemco model you mention.

Re: Mustad 3366 versus Tiemco 8089
My Tiemco substitution chart lists the TMC8089 as a Sprout, Forged, Wide Gape, Fine Wire, Bronze, Ball Eye (S), Sizes #2, 6, 10. The Mustad equivalent is listed as #33602 which is a Sprout, Ringed Eye (S), Gold Plated, Sizes #5/0 to 16.
The Mustad 3366 is a Sprout, Ringed Eye (S), Nickl., Brz., Gold, Blued, Sizes #8/0 -2,4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and Tiemco has no equivalent for it. Pattern application is wet flies versus Bass Bugs for the Tiemco 8089.
Hope this helps,

No one will ever mistake the Mustad 3366 for a dry fly hook but you have to love that hook. A great hook all the way around, strong, wide gap and cheap. The price eminds me of the old days when most Mustad hooks were $10-$12 per 1000. Yes, per thousand was correct. 8T :D
