Smelly fish?
I was talking with a non-angler about my inability to catch anything on a fly, and she posed the question, "Can fish smell? Maybe they smell your smoke."
I don't know for sure, but I assume that fish *can* smell, since they sell scented worms and scenting fluids to put on them.
My question to the forum, though, is if anybody knows if the smell of smoke will keep the fish away?
I don't smoke when I'm tying the flies, but I do smoke when I'm fishing, and usually when I'm tying the fly on.
Any thoughts?

fish can definately smell... as far as i know smoking definately makes a difference, maybe not so much in crystal water and fish that hunt on sight alone, but my grand father smoked, and he never used to while fishing, he even used to buy a special chemical to get the scent off his hands before he went out...
i wont even use suncream because of the smell - unless someone else puts it on...
i wonder my excuse is for my inability to catch then...

well if smoking does have an affect i have never seen it, never bothered any of my friends either.

Maybe I just talk myself into it, but if I forget to wash my hands after putting on sunscreen I seem to have tough luck too. Since talking myself into the idea that fish have such a great sense of smell, I rinse my hands in the stream (provided the water isn't too cold) when I arrive so my hands (which tie on my fly) smell right.
I dunno if it works, but it sure puts me in a better mind set.

I have read that fish are put off by the smell of nicotine
For what ever reason I only smoke when I fish
I try never to touch my fly with the hand I have been smoking with.
When it's time to change flys, I wash my hands first.
I really think this makes a difference.

I've hosted a few swaps here on FAOL. I can tell the heavy smokers when the packages come in. If I can pick up the odor, I'm sure fish can too. But does it hurt or help or not really matter? Not sure.

If you've ever had an incentive to quit smoking, this may be IT!!! How 'bout that? Improve your fishing and your life!!!

I tend to smoke a lot while fishing, even ending up blowing smoke onto the fly while tying it on the tippet. But I don't have problems catching plenty of fish. Those people who say nicotine repels fishs are blowing smoke http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif

Well, I've asked a few of them right after I caught them if they could smell me, but never could get a straight answer.

p.s. Why is it I seem to always remember catching more fish back when I smoked then I do today after I quit ...? I wonder if there were not just more fish then and maybe less people fishing for them.

I smoke my pipe while tying flies, while traveling to and from the water, while putting on my waders and getting ready to fish, while tying on flies, while wading and walking and while releasing the fish I catch. I can ususally hold my own with my catch ratio with others. You make the call.
