I'm trying to tie some flies using partridge hackle but when I wrap it it doesn't wrap very clean. Goes forward and backward. Is there a special way to wrap them clean?
Thanks

I usually tie in by the tip and either strip one side or fold one side of the feather.
....lee s.
Soft hackle feather like to have driven me nutty and I am certainly no expert, another alternative is to stroke the barbs of the feather to the rear while wrapping, wetting the fingers help. The good news is soft hackle flies have been some of the most productive on the stream.
I tie in at the tip of the feather, then wrap the feather with my right hand and stroke back the feather fibers with my left hand. Once I wrap the feather 1.5 to 2 times around, then start at the eye with the thread and make a nice neat head.
I tye in by the tip and 'fold' the barbs to the rear.
I am in the minority here. I tie in the feather by the butt. What am I thinking...
