Black Widow brookie fly
I was demonstrating flies in Toronto yesterday and was asked about a fly used 40 or 50 years ago in Central Ontario (Canada) for brook trout. I presume at that time it would have been a winged wet or maybe a spider/soft hackle. Apparently it was black with some white, but that is the only description provided. A middle-aged angler said his dad used to use it. Any ideas?

Could have been a Back and white hackle fly the "bivisible" tied to a dry hook range #10 - #18

You know, I hadn't thought of anyhing like that. You might be right. I will keep pursuing. Your fly is very handsome. Is it easy to see and does it catch fish more than others?

I always thought the black widow was a clump of dubbing wrapped in a small piece of a baggy and tied on the hook to form a little ball then add rubber legs, but the black and white thing I would say that the picture says it all.
