Um...maybe give your backcast time to open up?
Turn so your arm moves in front of you and you can watch the line go both ways. I think you are making the Rick mistake of moving the rod forward before the line straightens out in back.

I have the same problems occasionaly. I have learned to slow down on my casts, especially on the foward cast.
When you make your back cast, can you feel the rod load before you bring the rod forward?

Woo woo woo. Are you holding the line against the rod on your back cast then letting it go on your forward cast? You need to do this. Is you don't hold the line against the rod you can't build up 'tension' in the rod.
At least I think that's what you do. Can't believe I just can't rationalize this right now.
Sounds like you have 'slack' in the line
Strip in enough line to make sure the end of the your line is moving (tightened) before you attempt to pick up for the back cast.
Be sure to give the back cast time to straighten (watch)
Then come forward on a straight plane
stop dead
Practice, practice, practice. Kill the spider. Read JC's casting instructions on the homepage.
I couldn't find the instruction on the homepage, not the punch your palm page.
I had a defective rod like that when I first start too, it's still not fixed but working a little better.
