Northern bluegills
With the heat this summer the only decent gill fishing I had was on a trip during the later part of June.
I know the heat was wide spread...how did you guys fare?

Nice Pics :D
Gill fishing around here was slow, most of the gills were deep, or were in heavy structure where you couldn't get to them.

We had drought conditions in Texas along with the ever present heat. The drought really has lowered the water levels on ponds. Still catching good BG but wonder about the long term effects of the drought.
Very nice pictures...love the color in the bottom pic.

WOW! now that is some nice B/G and great pictures you have there. This year on a local lake which I fish regularly some realy nice sized gills have showed up and we have caught some up to 13" long.

Those are beautiful.
How were you fishing when you caught them and what were you using?
I was in the BWCA in early July and caught some nice bluegill in weedbeds, but only one around that size.

Nam....that's one massive, beautiful 'gill!!
Jeremy.

Hi Namekagon,
What is so impressive about your fish to me is the
location you caught them. It takes a very long time
for a gill to reach those sizes in your northern
clime and I suggest that many gill fishers there
never see one as large. I suspect that you may have
found out that very large bluegills and other sunfish
can be every bit as ellusive as large trout. They
don't reach those sizes by being dumb.*G* Way to
go!*G* Warm regards, Jim

I can simply say, "well done" and ask what patterns you were fishing?!
thanks for those inspiring photos.

I'm humbled by your appreciation of the photos guys. :D
I was fishing Sheep's Creek Dam one of the many small impoundments in western ND. It used to be a good trout fishery but with the drought and winter/summer kills they stocked walleye a few years a go and that took care of that.
Nothing fancy with patterns. Everything from a black bivis, foam cricket, deer hair beetle to some #10 and 12 Gaines poppers...all surface with a new cheap but nice orvis 4 wt combo.
Two additional photos of Sheep's Creek and the impoundment.

Nam,
Small world. I fish Sheep Creek Dam but never caught anything that nice this year. Gill fishing was mighty slow in most of the places I fish, including Sheep Creek this year. I had some pretty good fishing in early June but when it got hot I had a tough time finding them.
