I just started fly fishing three years ago with the intention of not becoming a fly tier. Well about a month ago I decided to just give it a little try and found out I really like it. Like it so much it may become another happy addiction. YIPEE

welcome to the BB, unlike some other addictions, this one will leave you satisfied when you come down, BUT of course WANTING MORE....
cycler68,
Take it slow and try not to think about the thousands of patterns you will have to spend the rest of your life buying materials for. Just kidding! :) You will be glad you started tying flies when you catch your first fish on one!
Doug :) :)

Welcome aboard, we are basicly a friendly group here. Just don't pay any attention to Dougie or Paul (flybinder) as they will lead you astray for sure!!
Fly tying is an addiction and one you find a lot of enjoyment with. No better way to relax after a hard day.
The "Dark Side" is rod building!! Never, never, go there!!
Then there is furling your own leaders a very civilized pastime akin to fly tying!
Tight lines!:D
Listen to Jack H, but I am not sure about the Rod building thing, very deep stuff there, you may want to desensitize yourself before jumping into that pool....
Your replies gave me a good chuckle :D I just spent the evening trying to tie a feather winged streamer using a peacock herl body and beard underneath. The wings didn't work out but the body and beard did so I figure I tied a nymph with a beard......lol
Well, Cycler68, obviously and UNFORTUNATELY, you've already been introduced to Hack Hise, in post #5. PLEASE, for your own sake....... ignore him and continue on with your new obsession of fly fishing and tying.
Jack's an okay, kinda kind, don't get me wrong, But, HE IS a perfect example as to "Why some lions, eat their own young". But, sorry, I digress......................
Just wanted to welcome you to FAOL. Hopefully, you'll "join in" as much as possible and learn more and more every visit.
It's very much, like "real family" here at FAOL. So much so, in fact, we even have our own "family black sheep"! (Which you met in post #5). We even have our own "Doug", aka "DShock". No family should be so punished.
Anyway, it IS a great group of folks here. I really hope you enjoy it!
Oh, sorry, one more thing................. you might hear the term "The NBOF", referred to in some posts. That would be; "The Nasty Boys Of Fly Anglers Online", for short.
Don't worry about them, or their comments. Personally, myself..... I'm too innocent, shy, coy and demure to even know much about this "sub-cult" of FAOL, but don't let it bother you if you happen to see the acronym pop up time to time.
So far, as near as I can tell about these guys...................... "If BS were steam, they could power the world"...................
I can tell you I started tying not quite 2 years ago, but it was crappie jigs. One thing let to another and I started selling crappie jigs and now have customers all over the country.
However something else happened, I started flirting with fly tying and then that led to buying a fly rod and reel, but at the same time I have become someone with issues about buying more and more materials. I never ever thought when this started that I would have so much tied up in feathers. Of course there a lot of other materials, but i tell you this to know and be careful or you may end up with a ton of money in tie up in feathers to tie with for crying out loud!
Good luck and I do love tying jigs and flies a ton!
