Check out the Okuma SLV. Tough, reliable and very smooth. I have one on my 8 weight and like it a lot. $59 retail.

Bass Pro Hobbs Creek Size III. $40 plus shipping brand new from Bass Pro
Thinking an AK sockeye reel is not a place to go cheap... I smoked a big Ross Cimarron on one fish this past summer and I have smoked a lot of good reels on them. Especially if you find yourself in big water, like the Kenai.
Several hundred steelhead and some chinook say the Hobbs Creek is just fine. Wouldn't hesitate to bring one to AK if I was going.
On the other hand, it IS an excuse to buy a nice reel. :p
Under the right circumstances reels are non-issues... I have caught hundreds of kings on fly gear where the reel was no problem... the fish could not leave the hole it was in anyway... But big water like the Kenai and a hot red will tear gear up!
Invitation has been open to you for a while... Just remember the Nu-Skin... and bring spares.

I have this reel for sale.
Not sure if it's in your budget? However, if I was fishing for large salmon in Alaska I wouldn't consider doing it with a low end reel. This reel has a drag that would definitely help in landing any salmon.
Perfect for your bailiwick, in my opinion.

bobbyg is exactly right. A trip to Alaska can be trip of a lifetime, don't spend all the time and money to get there ,then cut corners on your equipment. A breakdown could cost you several days of fishing before you can get equipment repaired or replaced. Good equipment with proper care will last you many years if not a lifetime.
