Am looking at the 3n series in large arbor mostly because of its 4.2 oz weight.It says that it is a 3-4 weight reel and 5 weight with spectra,what is spectra a?.I plan on getting a spare spool so I could get the flex package with the standard spool for the 5 weight.First big question is it a silent retrieve with outgoing click?.
All my Abels are silent, both ways, no clicking. Spectra is a spun backing, it's thinner allowing you to use either more backing or put a bigger line on a spool.
A few years ago Abel added an outgoing click to the Super Series reels. I have reels that predate the click and reels that have the outgoing click.
I'm not sure how an Abel Super Series or Big Game reel can be silent on the retrieve since the dog pawl that engages the teeth on the drag plate must move in and out against the teeth as the reel is cranked. All of my Abel Big Game and Super Series reels have click on the retrieve. Only the two newest have an outgoing click.
Spectra or Gel Spun backing is made from Dyneema fibers which have a high tensile strength in small diameter. These lines are often referred to as spectra, gel spun, GsP, super lines, super braids or just braids. They have a very high strength for diameter With 50lb spectra you can usually get about 60% more backing compared to 20lb dacron and about 100% more compared to 30lb dacron. These lines are slick and do not hold knots as well as mono or dacron so special care must be taken when tying knots with them. Spectra backing also costs about three times as much as dacron.
The Abel Super 3N Large arbor will take a WF-5-F line and 40-45 yards of 20lb dacron or 60-70 yards of 12lb dacron, both of which are plenty for most trout situations.

I got up this morning checked eBay and found quite a bit of Abel.super 2 and super 4's in California.Problem with the super 4 is its 5.6 oz verses 4.6 for the newer 4n.I might look toward the super 2 for my four weights.

I use a Super 4 and a Big Game 0 on my 4wts. I like the Super 4 but love the old Big Game 0. The solid back weighs 4.7 oz and the ported model 4.45 oz. Large arbor is nice, but these are hard to beat if you can find one.
The Super 4 will work on a 9' 4 wt and you'll balance fine. I use one on my 9' 5 wt. but it also balances my 4 wt's. I use Super 4N's on my 9' 4 wt.s. IMO the diameter on the Super 2 is too small paired with the wider spool but YMMV.Quote:

The Super 4 is a fine reel and one that would be a great addition. My buddy uses one on his 8 1/2 ft. 4 wt. Winston Biix.
I decided on a Abel super series 3n in gloss black for my four weights.First thing noticed was the light weight but what was odd was the clicker,louder on the retrieve than on the drag seemed backwards.Guess I will have to get use to the click click click over the silent retrieve of galvans.
