Yellow Bass Patterns
Does anyone fish specifically for yellow or white bass this time of year and can you suggest a pattern? I have been catching some on small (10-12) ties of my own, sort of like wooly buggers, with besad heads, but short tailed as the fish short strike. I'd like to hear year thoughts. David

I haven't done extensive field research by any means, but so far the best fly I've used for white bass was a chartreuse-over-white Clouser Deep Minnow.
I also haven't tried fly-fishing for yellow bass, but have noticed we usually do best on those (using spinning gear) by dragging a small jig right along the bottom. So....some sort of weighted nymph should be a good choice, and depending on the depth of water you'll be fishing, a sinking line or sink-tip line might be worth a try.

relatively small (6-8) sparsly tied Clouser minnows work really well for me in the fall. Usually in chartreuse/white or blue/white. If their in the shallows of tight to the rocks, I'll fish an unweighted minnow pattern in the same colors. I've also had good luck with peacock bodied woolies, but they aren't really durable enough.

Ive had really good luck catchin white bass (we callem sand bass here) on these 2 flies... The baitfish flies here are tied on 2/0 stinger hooks for striper fishin but tied in sizes 6 or 8 are killer on white bass this time of year... Also a good crawdad tied in a size 8 2x long streamer hook striped in realy slow works too...

I fish a lot for the whites and yellows, although winter and spring seem to be the best times for my fishing style. IMHO, you can't beat a conehead white wooly bugger. You can catch them on about everything from a deciever to a size 14 PT. But, the white woolly seems to outfish everything thing else. Unless it is shallow or they are busting the surface I'd use a sinking line. Good luck, hope you catch a ton.
Go catch a fish,
Gary
