Am I losing my mind, or do you really cut the hook eye off the fly of the week this week? I guess it is just to look at? Cool idea though for building extended bodies.

Yes the eye is cut off, it is what we call an art fly, intended for the sole putpose of exhibition

Midge Man,
However,
If you leave out the wire, substitute mono, and leave the eye on, his can be a real, honest to goodness, fly that you can USE. Really.
Won't look as perfectly precise, though.
Good Luck!

Uhh... and bragging rights, too.Quote:

David, to do the segmentation, just tie the raffia lenght wise and making sure it circles the underbody, then cut off excess and pull it forward and secure it again where the next segment will begin.
I would lie to you if I told you its easy, but with patience and practice it can be done, and when I say patience I mean alot of it, now I'm working on a stonefly and I started it around 5 weeks ago and I have just finished the abdomen and the legs whish by the way are not tied yet to the fly I think the thorax, wingcases and head will take another 5 or 6 weeks at least........ :D

I am humbled by your skill, patience and pure artistic talent.
I am glad you didn't pick a centipede to copy or we wouldn't see you for several years. lol
Keep up the good work. I sure do want to see the that stone fly.
IMO your flies are art museum quality.
I think it would be a crime to actually fish your flies.

I will go to bed laughing
Carp, thank you. I thought I was going nuts. What a cool idea for building the body. The finished product is pretty incredible.
When I tied a realistic mayfly, I decided to consider the eye of the hook to be the antennae.
In the eye of the beholder, so to speak. If you're nice I'll post a picture of mine.
