Good question. A lot of it depends on the rod, how many guides, how many sections, etc. Is the builder experenced?
You might find that you can build it yourself for a lot less.
How much are you willing to pay per hour based on the builders skills?
I'm a beginner, only 4 rods so far and would build a rod for lets say a 100 bucks which would work out to about $3.50 and hour 'cause I'd want it to the best I could do!
I do not want to build rods for money!! Only for pleasure!

Haha, that's how I feel about it, too: Very low return on the hourly wage. It takes me about two months to build a rod as I take a whack at it every couple weeks. I have a couple catalogs and it seems 100 bucks is what they knock off a complete rod if you buy it unassembled. Gives new meaning to "some assembly required".

I just noticed you are a Pipe Fitter. A very highly skilled proffesion. Therefore you should have no trouble building a Fly Rod. Just jump in and do it!! There's lots of help here, if you need it.

I have plenty of experience building rods and have taught rod-building classes for years, but when it comes to selling my abilities as a rod-builder I am cautious. Bottom line I feel I can build a rod as well as the best custom rod-builders, but bottom line when it comes down to an hourly income for doing so I would have to charge the buyer more than it is worth and then I do not have the where-withal to provide a warranty.
I will build a rod for someone if they insist, but I make it very clear they can do much better purchasing a rod from a manufacturer who can provide a much stronger warranty at a lower price. Actually I prefer to enjoy the rods I build myself and then when tired of them ? donate to a worthy cause.

Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $200 over the cost of hard components and blank, depending on the skill and reputation of the builder. This is from a recent rod pricing survey in RodMaker Magazine.
