The fraternity of fly fishers
And Flyanglers like you!
It's been a while but I've fished the Potomac a few times up at Point of Rocks and Harper's Ferry for smallmouth. Caught some, nothing big, all on poppers/topwater. Nice place to wet wade when it gets hot.
I don't fish any one spot; like to mix it up for a little variety. Congrats on catching fish playing match the hatch - I usually stick with stuff like Trude variations that I can see easier in the pocket water or, if they're picky something like a #14 CDC & Elk that is pretty visible as well; the browns like them both. You say you're tangling - what length rod are you using? I use a 7' 4wt and don't have too many issues, as long as I check behind me before I cast.
Yea, I believe I'm going to Morgan Run Sunday Morning. I got a hold of a couple rainbows from BHC yesterday off of adams and have had strikes on sulphers and cahills, but missed the strikes. Where do you fish at BHC? I tend to fish the area 1/2 mile past the bridge. Maybe we can meet up and do some fishing. I usually fish BHC some Fridays and usually saturdays or Sundays. Nice run there of mild current and good holding areas. In fact, the trout you see in my profile pic is from BHC yesterday. I went to BHC this morning, but did more untangling then fishing. It is a tough place to fish and now I am looking for waters that are more open with less tree overhangs.
I fished Beaver Creek a couple of winters ago without much luck; never have fished Morgan Run. I was up at BHC last Friday and did pretty well on attractor dries; stream was a little off color from previous night's rain but fish were still looking up. Saw a few mayflies and lots of yellow/lime sallies.
