An Addition to the Barbed V.S. Barbless debate.

by Flyandtie1 on 02-28-2008 at 10:57 PM
One of Eric-WD's comments got me to thinking.

He said something to the effect of "people who fish all day for the chance at one fish may choose to keep the barbs."

I think this would be under the Pro's section of the barbed hooks. They do hold fish better once you drive it in past the barb. However, under certain circumstances, lets say bass fishing, It could be very hard to put the hook through the thick toothy section of the upper lip with a Big 'ol barb on a hook. But, Once you got that hook in there is almost no chance of losing him from shaking the hook.

I read about tarpon fishing in a magazine, They were saying to strike the fish 3 times extremely hard with the hook set to make sure the hook gets in past the barb into their tough bony mouths.

Now does this matter for trout? Not really, If you hook set with a 5-6 weight 3 times extremely hard, on a poor little trout, your gonna rip its little lips off.

My Opinion is that bass, tarpon and other gnarly mouthed fish might need the barbs on the hooks and extreme hook sets. But for trout, Barbless and light strikes are all thats needed.

Anyways, Thanks for reading my rambles!

Infrequent fishing

by Flyandtie1 on 02-24-2008 at 08:25 PM
Well, I haven't been fly fishing in a while(a couple weeks) and the Other day I went fishing at the local lake with my spinning rod(GASP!!) because they stocked some trout and there was simply no room to cast a fly rod without hooking people.

So I did the next best thing, Ultralight rod, 2lb test, Jigs and some jigs that I tied. And caught a few fish. Close enough.

Anyways, The next day after the plant I went in with the fly rod because there wasn't that many people there, I busted out the 8'6" 3wt and did some fishing. I got a few nibbles here and there, on a Flashback Hares ear Nymph. But no Hook ups.

They were shooting around the surface like a bunch of dorks making themselves perfect candidates for a cormorant. And the cormorant's did take notice and flew over and ate a few of 'em, before they wised up.

Good day, Cold and windy, and no fish. But it was nice to be out.

Later, Tight Lines!!

Elitism in fly fishing

by Flyandtie1 on 02-22-2008 at 04:49 AM
This was inspired by a post in the sound off forum.

I think Elitism in fly fishing is stupid. People who think they are better than others just because they can afford a scott rather than a walmart combo need to take another look at life.

These people, I think, are just trying to compensate for something else and they are insecure in their own fishing ability. They put others who are doing better than them down because they want to seem superior and it makes them feel better. People who say "oh they must have been stockers" just to put someone down because it wasn't a wild trout. Truth be told its these kind of people that probably can't even tell the difference between a stocker and a wild fish.

Fishing is not about having top 'o' the line rods, newest lines, most expensive reels, and other BS. To me, its about relaxation and fun.

I will admit I have some high end equipment but that doesn't mean that I go around bragging about it to make myself feel better and putting people down and calling their stuff cheap. Its wrong and can really hurt another fisherpersons confidence, especially if they are beginners.

Anyways, elitist, purist, whatever, I think its pathetic. Go get into some high testosterone sport and leave fishing for the others who just wanna enjoy it.

That may be a strong opinion, But that is my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Off the soapbox now.

Barbed v.s. Barbless debate

by Flyandtie1 on 02-09-2008 at 09:24 PM
There is almost always some kind of discussion like this on the main FAOL part of the bb. And it never seems to come to an end and final decision.

I'll list some of the pro's and con's of using barbless over barbed.

Pros:
  • easier to realease fish
easier to get out of self
    less handling of fish
    possible long line releases
not as many fish deaths due to stress from removing the hook

Cons:
  • long line releases( depending on if you appreciate this or not)
    More expensive in some cases.

Thats about as many as I can think of right now, but in my mind the pros of barbless vastly outweigh the cons. The term "long line release" can be looked at as a blessing in disguise for not having to get your hands wet and cold, and not having to touch the fish. Or it can be looked at as a stupid hated thing. I prefer to appreciate the "long line release."

And if the price thing bothers you then just crimp the barbs yourself.

If barbless were really useless as some people claim then would rivers and other protected places require the use of them and them only? I don't think so. So they must be doing something great.

off the soapbox now.

The rain on the windows

by Flyandtie1 on 01-26-2008 at 02:58 AM
There is rain on the windows, Evidence of a shower. The soft pattering on the roof that can only faintly be heard over the TV. The dark looming clouds when you look out the window signal another squal impending. The wind rustling the trees, the thunder growling in the sky. A strike of lightning tells you no chance of donning the rain jacket and going fishing with a lightning rod.

Hope this storm clears up soon, but until then, its just Rain on the windows...
