I was in need of a new nymph leader for my 7 wt rod. I generally only use it to fish large, heavily weighted stonefly nymphs like JARS, mostly one at a time, but on occasion two at a time, and always under a large thingamabobber.

My old leader was furled out of 2# Berkeley Vanish in a 10-8-6 configuration with proportions of 40% butt section, 30% mid section, and 30 % tip section. A tip ring was incorporated, and 2X tippet was the standard for fishing the big nymphs under an indicator.

Believing that a slimmer profile would work better, i.e. not have so much resistance to letting the fly sink, I opted for an 8-6 configuration of the 2# BV with proportions of 40% butt and 60% mid / tip, with a tip ring incorporated. The finished length of the leader is about 5'8".

I had the chance to fish the new leader for several hours yesterday and was quite satisfied with it. I fished both a single JARS, and a tandem of them with the second fly trailing the first one by about 2', under the thingamabobber. Total distance from the thingamabobber, which was placed quite close to the butt of the leader, to the trailing nymph was the best part of 12'.

It's impossible to say that there was a marked improvement of the new leader over the old one. But it is quicker to set up, uses less material, and furls in about the same amount of time. And with satisfactory performance for it's intended use, that is progress, to my way of thinking.

John

P.S. No tight loops with the 2 fly rig - big open loops and watch your right ear.

hi folks, yesterday, I drove 80 miles RT to my closest Orvis store in hopes of seeing, holding and possibly purchasing my first furled leader. It did not happen. As I understand f leaders, the advantages of using one are for strength, the ability to reuse the leader portion and the ability to change tippets easily. I fish primarily for trout, bass and panfish when we go to our cabin in WVa. However, when at our home outside of D.C. I fish for stripers and plan to fish for snakeheads in the POTOMAC. (We even have a tournament to catch snakeheads! Another story for that one....last week a fellow angler caught one that was 36in long and very hefty.) Any way, it is for heavy duty fishing that I am considering a furled leader for my 7-8 wt rod. I am assuming that such a leader would most likely have a small metal ring to attach the tippet...a long piece of 10-12 pound mono. Is this correct???? My sales person didn't know what a furled leader is and said that a metal ring would deter the fish. I asked if their braided leaders were somewhat similar except that one is braided and the other furled. He didn't know that either. Neither did he know what cree hackle is either.I gave up and came home. Therefore, KI am at the mercy of my fellow faolers to teach me about furled leaders. Be patient ! Gerri

Ok, realize that this is coming from total ignorance. I love to fish furled leaders, but don't have the time to do my own...

Have any of you who furl thread leaders ever considered furling glow in the dark thread? The thread is usually whitish, so it would blend against the "sky" of silver in a night time stream. But I was thinking one could hit a couple of inches of the leader with a flashlight, and use the glow spot as an indicator...

May be outa my gourd, but such is life.
