Weekly Fraser Valley Sport fishing column for May 20 to 27, 2013

So far in our current series we have covered bar fishing and trolling. I know some of you are finding this boring, but bare with me there are times when things need to be pruned back to a bare stock in order for new life to unfold. That being said this week's topic is float fishing. Oh, you don't fish with floats? Perhaps no; or perhaps you fish with them under their pseudonym of strike indicator. Whatever you choose to call it a float/bobber is a float.

Many anglers can trace their roots back to fishing bait under a float. Many anglers, myself included, have over the process of time and vanity dismissed this method of fishing as juvenile; while other have embraced it and taken it to another level.

My first indication that I had misjudged the lowly float was at fraser valley lake, when I watched a friend suspend a fly under the largest fishing float I had ever seen. When I made a comment on the size of the float, my friend replied, "Exactly, that float is so big, that when a trout tries to take the fly down, it sets the hook on it's self."

Some years later I met an older gentleman who was enthralled with my flies, and annually bought two to three dozen from me. Another float fisherman, who loved nothing more than to sit quietly on a dock casting his float and fly with an old Johnson closed faced reel, attached to and antique glass rod. When he passed on from this life to the next, he left me the canvas topped waders that he had used for duck hunting; with a note that read, "You might find these useful, they have served me well since 1948."

Today we have a small army of float fishermen; although they don't call it float fishing. The word float has given way to strike indicator. Vanity and prejudice have no place in successful fishing; they get in the way of your catching.

The Report
For kokanee try: Scarlet Ibis, San Juan Worm, Double Trude, Blood Worm, Kokanee Thriller, Kokanee Zonker or Red Spratley.

Our lower Mainland bass and panfish fishing well too. For Bass try: Big Black, Wooly Bugger, Gomphus Bug, Crayfish, Clouser's Deep Minnow, Lefties Deceiver, Dolly Whacker, Bucktail, Hair Frog, Poppers, Chernobyl Ant, or Stimulator. For Panfish try smaller (size 12 to 16) versions of the above.

Due to dangerous fishing conditions are withholding the rivers section of this report until safe water levels return.

I've only fished here in the summer, half the time under Hoot Owl restrictions. Always considered it a good place to spend a day fishing dries, catching some browns; nothing spectacular but fun. Good flows, the time off from fishing pressure and some stream improvements that seem to be taking hold made it like fishing completely different water (more than a few places here where you could float your hat)

Some very nice fish, all willing to look up

Fished skwalas the whole time up here (undersized by one; these were all tied on #10's and the naturals were a bit larger)

didn't see any crawling around, but there were lots of shucks in the bushes and the fish seemed to have retained memory of them

a bit further down found a real good March Brown hatch coming off and fish on station

kept the skwala on just to see and they seemed fine with that; picked up the first 'bow of the day and one confused-looking brookie

big bug water

stream had a bit of color from 2 days of rain; only saw a few of the bugs in the air, not many in the bushes but the fish were still willing

switched to a different fly from the Rogue I'd used the other day to see if
a. it would catch fish
2. it would stand the abuse

yes on both counts; this one took a pretty good beating and held up well

Surface action shut down around 6, my cue to head back to the barn.

Best corndogs ever

county fair's not 'till late August, may have to hit it earlier; there's a monster truck event or the Rock Chuck show coming up that look interesting

Regards,
Scott

Continuing the search for some clear, running water. Guy in the local flyshop lets on that a stream just down the road (relatively speaking) is high, but clean and THE big bugs are coming off. I file that away as probable B.S.; why would someone tell that to a perfect stranger unless he?s running a misdirection or is planning to jump me on the stream, steal my sorry collection of gear and bury my remains in a shallow grave along the Interstate? After the tailwater adventure of the previous day, though, some action a bit closer to home base seems in order and the chance to toss some topwater stuff seals the deal.

Weekly Fraser Valley Sport fishing column for May 13 to 20, 2013

Last week we spoke of bar fishing, this week I wish to dwell a bit on trolling. My introduction to fishing our BC interior lakes back in 1970 was accomplished by; you guessed it, trolling with the ever popular Ford Fender. Back in the day the Gang Troll, commonly miss quoted as a Willow Leaf, was as popular as fly fishing is today. Back nearly a half century ago, trolling with a Gang Troll was by far the most popular searching method on our central interior lakes. Today many still troll, but more often with a fly.

I personally recommend that novice fly anglers begin by trolling flies. This leaves the mind free catalog all the sights and sounds that are second nature advanced fly anglers; while catching enough fish to keep them interested.

Trolling is not as laid back as bar fishing, but is equally as relaxing. Particularly if you take up the oars; there is a peace and tranquility that is often found in the rhythm of presenting a fly with the perfect stroke.

Trolling is an exercise in hope and hope when fulfilled breeds confidence. Or as Paul said in his letter to the Romans, "knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope and hope maketh not ashamed;"

The Report

Fishing on our lower mainland lakes is good. Try working the warmer waters in the north east section of your favorite lake for better success. For wet (sinking) fly fishing try: Bloodworm, Nations Black, Zulu, Wooly Bugger, Wooly Worm, Pumpkin Head, Micro Leach, Doc Spratley, Halfback, Sixpack, or Baggy Shrimp. For dry (floating) fly action try: Lady McConnel, Tom Thumb, Irresistible, Double Hackled Peacock, Royal Coachman, Black Gnat, Griffith Gnat, Black Ant, or Elk Hair Caddis. For kokanee try: Scarlet Ibis, San Juan Worm, Double Trude, Blood Worm, Kokanee Thriller, Kokanee Zonker or Red Spratley.

Our lower Mainland bass and panfish fishing well too. For Bass try: Big Black, Wooly Bugger, Gomphus Bug, Crayfish, Clouser's Deep Minnow, Lefties Deceiver, Dolly Whacker, Bucktail, Hair Frog, Poppers, Chernobyl Ant, or Stimulator. For Panfish try smaller (size 12 to 16) versions of the above.

Our interior lakes look good for the long weekend. For wet fly fishing try: Chironomid, Bloodworm, Halfback Nymph, Baggy Shrimp, Pumpkin Head, Wooly Bugger, Big Black, Dragon Nymph, Sixpack, 52 Buick, or Doc Spratley. For dry fly fishing try: Lady McConnel, Tom Thumb, Black Ant, Water Boatman, Adams, Irresistible, Renegade, or Elk Hair Caddis.

The Fraser River is fair for cutthroat and dolly varden. Try fishing the clearer water at the outflow of Fraser's feeder streams. For dolly varden try large (size #4 to 2) Eggo, Clouser's Deep Minnow, Tied Down Minnow, Roller Muddler, Dolly Whacker, Big Black, Kaufmann Stone, or Flesh Fly.

The Harrison River is high but somewhat fishable for cutthroat and rainbow. For cutthroat try Rolled Muddler, Tied Down Minnow, Professor, Anderson Stone, American Coachman, Flash Fly, or Czech Nymph. For rainbow try: Kaufmann Stone, Big Black, Wooly Bugger, Black Gnat, Souboo, Zulu, or Renegade.

The Vedder River is high but fishable for steelhead, rainbow, dolly varden, and cutthroat. For steelhead try; Steelhead Nightmare, Kaufmann Stone, Polar Shrimp, GP, Popsicle, Squamish Poacher, Big Black, or Flat Black.

Well, I spent all of last week fishing a delayed harvest section of Pine Creek near Slate Run, PA. All I can say is WOW. Had five great days of sight fishing to rising Brown trout. Great caddis hatches in the morning (really more like blizzards!) followed by some of the best March Brown hatches I've ever seen, with dozens of fish rising within easy casting distance.

The folks in that area plant this section with some great quality Browns and while we never caught any huge fish, we caught more 14"-18" fish than I had ever hoped for.

The stream conditions were perfect for spot and stalk fishing to very agressively feeding fish. I had hoped to fish some other areas along this drainage but the fishing was so good so we just couldn't talk ourselves into leave it! The weather was great, my only complaint was it was too sunny.

I'll post some pic over the next day or two.

If you're in the area or looking for a place to fish in PA, I HIGHLY recommend checking this river out.

I typically visit my mother on Wednesdays.

I go a little early and fish at the dam there.

Second cast I had a behemoth pike turn at the wall.

It was so big it made my knees shake.

I threw right back in there and this one slammed it.

I was actually disappointed that I caught this one instead of the monster.

I have a superstition that makes me stop fishing after catching one large pike or trout .

The rematch may be on Mother's Day or next Wednesday.

Weekly Fraser Valley Sport fishing column for May 6 to 13, 2013

Do you remember bar fishing? If you began angling before the mid eighties, you most likely do. Before the popularity of drift fishing (bottom bouncing), you could tell when there was a run of fish in our Fraser River by the line of lawn chairs strategically placed along the Fraser's banks. Bar fishing has lost its appeal to many in this day and age; but there is still a loyal following who faithfully plant their rod and holder in the river bank and recline in their lawn chair to watch and weight. While some frown on this style of angling as too slow, it has its pluses. It is definitely relaxed, often quiet, and can be communal with the same anglers coming to the same spot, week after week, year after year. Bar fishing requires patience, the long suffering kind, which says something about the character of these anglers. Patience is a commodity that could serve all anglers well; as it does the Great Blue Heron. Have you ever taken the time to watch these birds' fish? There is a lesson to be learned here. Is your harried and frantic lifestyle gaining you anything more than stress? Think about it and we will delve deeper into this pool of fishing, fishermen, and life; next week.

Hit my cabin on the Au Sable over the past few days for steelhead. There were some fish in the river but warm weather and crowds made the steelhead bite tough. So we switched to trout in the upper reaches of the river. The recent rains still had the water level high and stained, so we switched to "Plan C". That's why I love the Au Sable, there is always a section that will give up fish when the other sections are not fishable. First couple smallies of the year as well as my buddy Mark getting his first pike of the year.
