Olive Willy
By Stan Carlberg

I am not sure of the origin of this fly, but I picked it up at Swede's Fly Shop in Spokane, Washington and brought one home and disassembled it. So this is my version of the materials. It's an excellent fly for rainbow trout in our small mountain lakes here.

Materials, Olive Willy:

    Hook: TMC 5212 size 12.

    Thread: Olive 8/0.

    Head: Small red glass bead.

Tail: Downy fluffy stuff at base of the feather from a dyed yellow pheasant rump.

    Body: Medium olive chenille.

    Hackle: Dyed yellow pheasant rump.

Step 1

    1. Put bead head on hook and insert in vise.

    Step 2

    2. Start thread.

    Step 3

    3. Then prepare tail material.

    Step 4

    4. Tie in tail material.

    Step 5

    5. Tie in body material wrap therad forward to just behind the bead.

    Step 6

    6. Wrap body material forward to just behind the bead head leaving room for hackle.

    Step 7

    7. Tie in hackle.

    Step 8

    8. Wrap hackle 2 or 3 turns and tie off, and at this point I like to put a drop of head cement to help hold the hackle in place.

    Step 9

    9. Finished fly.

    Finished Flies

Enjoy. ~ Stan
