SHORT TRIP

Rick Zieger - June 14, 2010

It is another day off. I had things that had to go into the garden. Places in the garden needed to be weeded. There were a few other things that needed to be done. These were even things on my list. Fishing was about firth on the list. Hard to believe that, but there are days.

It was 2:30 in the afternoon and all the things were done so its time to scratch the itch. It took ten minutes to get everything changed and all the stuff in the truck and be on the way. I went back to a pond that is near town that I have been to this year.

The pond is about 50 yards off the road and is not seen from the road. Another of those ponds, in this area, that is about the size of a football field and was made to stop erosion. I am so glad that so many people did this. Give me many ponds to fish in.

I had grabbed two rods and they had a black furled tail mohair leech and a white boa yarn leech on them. Those seemed to be god flies to start with and the flies went in the water.

The mohair fly was first, as it was on the rod that I did not put down. No more reason than that. I cast the fly out about 15 feet from shore. The fly had just hit the water and there was a swirl. It was a nice fat scrappy gill that wanted to do anything but come to the shore. I slid it over the grass to me. I was back about 15 feet from the shore line.

Made another cast and had the carbon copy thing happen. It was another fat gill that was as scrappy as the first one. This day looked like it could be a great deal of fun. Since this pond has no trees that I have to fight with for flies, I moved up to the edge of the pond so I could get the fish in the water.

Made another cast and this time the fly dropped about a foot before it went sideways. This time it was a very nice crappie. This fish was about 18 inches long. Larger than any crappie I had caught in this pond before.

I picked up four more gills and one more crappie in this area. I then moved about 40 feet and tried again. This time with the white boa fly. I let the fly drop for a few seconds and then started to retrieve it. It had not moved very far when it was hit very hard. Fish it hit going away from me and acted very much like a bass. When I got it close I saw that I had another large crappie. Got this fish in and it was nearly the same size as the first crappie.

I picked up another 7 gills and two smaller crappie at this spot. Being a curious person, I tried the black mohair leech and got another 3 gills and two more crappie.

I moved down the pond again. I picked up 4 crappie and 5 gills in this area with the white boa fly. Then I tried the black furl tailed leech and got 4 more gills and 4 more crappie in the same area.

I moved twice more on the pond and had the same thing happen. I would catch some fish on a fly and then get more by changing to another fly. At the last place I tied on a third fly, a hares ear and caught fish on that in the same area that I had fished with the other two flies.

Need to do some more experimenting on this.

Left after an hour, forgot to take water in my rush. I am not always the brightest bulb on the block, maybe never. But I was thirsty and headed home.

I had 32 gills and 21 crappie, plus it had been a lot of fun. Got the fish filleted and took some fillets around and shared them.

Hope you can get out on the water.

Rick
