Unlike many lodges, Gates Au Sable Lodge has excellent food.
The Hungry Fisherman Dining Room is open for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner seven days a week. They offer a full menu
including daily home-cooked specials. Their homemade soups,
pies, breads, and Au Sable hashbrowns are favorites among
regular guests. The evening meal includes your choice
of homemade soup or juice, basket of fresh baked breads, full
dinner salad, and main entree with potato. The menu is low
carb friendly. You may decide to top off your meal with one
of Julie's special desserts. Some of the guests come to the
lodge simply to enjoy relaxing and dining with a view of the
river. Guests are never hungry leaving Julie's dining room!
Gates Au Sable Lodge also has a full fly shop on
premise. Rusty Gates, owner, (shown on the right) eagerly
shares his knowledge with dedicated anglers. "When time
permits I enjoy showing other anglers how to tie some of
the special flies we've developed for the Au Sable system."
Honored by Fly Rod and Reel in 1995 as it's
"Angler of the Year," Rusty is very active on the
conservation front with the Anglers of the Au Sable.
A NEW book, Seasons on the Au Sable, authored
by Rusty Gates, is scheduled to be released the Opening Day
of trout season, April 28, 2007. All proceeds from book
sales will go to the Anglers of the Au Sable.
This is a huge opportunity to help out the Anglers of the
Au Sable while getting some insider-tips for fishing the
Au Sable. It's a great way to see when what bugs were
hatching, and what fishing to expect for any given week.
It's also a chance to be on the river daily, for those

The shop is an authorized Orvis dealer and carries a full line
of Orvis tackle and accessories. They also stock other top
quality tackle brands such as Winston, Simms, Ross, Abel,
Cortland and Scientific Anglers. Check out the Shop Specials
too - you just might find a rare bamboo rod.
Of course, Gates Au Sable Lodge has guides who are
full-time professionals and on the river every day. Their
knowledge and skills will help you understand the techniques
used to be successful. Float trips are available on the
North Branch, Mainstream, South Branch, and Mio "Trophy
Water" of the Au Sable, as well as the Manistee River.
Complete packages can be put together for corporate
outings. These could include flyfishing classes to
introduce your non-angling clients to the sport of
flyfishing. Float trips would also be available in
our classic Au Sable River Boat, allowing you to spend
quality time on stream with your clients. Northern
Michigan is also famous for its golf courses, many just
minutes away from the lodge.
